Egan's Creek Greenway - The Egan's Creek Greenway is 238 acres of "environmentally-sensitive" property. The greenway is toward the center of Amelia Island, extending between Atlantic Avenue and Sadler Road. It is a place to take a hike and explore island nature. Egan's Greenway is open sunrise to sunset, and you may prefer to hike with a partner, as you may find yourself to be the only soul around. (You can take along your dog, on a leash.) To enter the greenway, go to the Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center where you will find the entrance behind the auditorium. This is a good place to park to enter the Greenway, as you can utilize the Recreation Center's public restrooms. There is a 2-mile trail called the Blue Heron Loop. Hiking the Greenway in the early hours of the morning or toward the end of the day is when you might best glimpse various types of wildlife. You will have the opportunity to spot bird life such as red-shouldered hawks, downy woodpeckers, purple martins, wood ducks, turkey vultures, belted kingfishers, Carolina wrens, red cardinals, blue jays, herons, brown pelicans, wood storks, egrets, and other animals such as marsh rabbits and a possible bobcat. Alligators do live in Egan's Creek, so stay alert. Stop by the Community Center and pick up a brochure with maps of the Greenway, and also a list of the many different types of birds you can expect to see when you visit the park.

Local Wildlife
Orange-beaked, orange legged, black-backed Skimmers hunkered down and facing the wind. These winter birds skim the waves for fish, then rest on Amelia Island's beaches, sometimes even lying down flat-out. Often the lighter colored orange-billed Royal Terns rest on the beach near the Skimmers. You may also see a variety of brownish gulls and sandpipers all in their non-descript winter plumage. Looking out to sea as you walk the beach may yield another surprise during the winter. Often you will see splashes, sometimes dolphins feeding, sometimes brown pelicans or ospreys crashing into the water to catch a fish. But be sure to look closely - maybe that splash is really a spout. You might be seeing one of the rarest animals on earth, the endangered Northern right whale. Only about 300 of the whales exist, and many of them migrate to waters off Amelia island and thereabouts to socialize and give birth during the winter months. Each winter, endangered Northern Right Whales travel from Canada's Atlantic Coast to give birth off Amelia Island's shores. Armadillos and alligators are a common sight to both Fort Clinch and Little Talbot Island State Parks. Be sure to look at the ponds and freshwater ditches for wintering pied-bill grebes and other ducks. Also, notice the woodpeckers, cardinals, and jays in the neighboring trees. Winter is the best time to watch for raptors; the hawks, ospreys, vultures and other birds of prey that live in our area. During the winter, these birds are getting ready for their breeding season, and can often be seen chasing each other or circling together. Look for the great horned owls, osprey prey, or you might catch sight of a rare bald eagle. On a warm spring evening, you might come face to face with a giant loggerhead sea turtle. Amelia Island is a haven for these creatures that are protected by the Endangered Species Act. They come in the night during spring and early summer to lay their eggs. The chance of survival for the hatchlings is around one in a thousand. It is important never to interfere or disturb a turtle or her nest. From May to October you will find sea turtle nests marked with stakes and yellow tape. Loggerhead, Green, and occasionally, Leatherback female turtles will deposit a clutch of about 100 ping pong ball sized eggs that will hatch 55-60 days later. If you take a stroll near the sand dunes in any of the local state parks on a warm, winter day, you might still be able to see gopher tortoises coming out of their burrows to enjoy the sun. Another way to look for our winter wildlife is to visit the salt-marsh on the west side of Amelia and adjacent islands. Contact Amelia River Cruises (904) 261-9972. You are almost certain to see white pelicans. These cousins of our brown pelicans are nearly twice their size and pure white, with black flight feathers and only visit our area in the winter. If you are lucky, you might even see them herding fish into shore, a feeding pattern much different than the awkward dives of the brown pelican. Although the white pelicans entertain us during the winter, during the rest of the year, these birds inhabit freshwater lakes and streams in our country's Midwest and Western states. The numerous creeks and rivers that feed the Intracoastal Waterway provide wide-eyed onlookers the opportunity for viewing dolphins, manatees, otters, and alligators.
